Pay it Forward

August 27, 2008

I was talking to some of my friends on Etsy the other night and they were asking how many of us had a PIF in their shops. Now I like to think I'm fairly saavy about Etsy and things in general but I was stumped. What the heck is a PIF? It turns out PIF simply means to Pay It Forward, a practice many Etsians have of creating a handmade item which they in turn put into their shop basically for free. So in the spirit of creating something nice, I created two really nice necklaces for my PIF's.

Rough Pics of New Pieces

August 14, 2008

The Norway Maple Spirit pendant is smaller than I usually have been doing, and has a longer accent piece with Olive, Khaki and Jonquil Swarovski crystals to hang it from. Hanger is sterling silver spiraled wire.

Here are some new earrings I've just finished, pics are rough and I will take better later on today. The earrings are all about 2" in length. The orange pair are hammered copper with topaz Sawrovski and focal beads are from my sister Lori's stash (thanks Lo), the spirals are sterling silver with Olive, Khaki and Jonquil Swarovski's, and the third pair are hammered sterling with two frosted glass leaves. I wanted a vine look for those. The final pair are imprinted from a Silver Maple leaf and the hooks and accent are copper and Swarovski crystals.

Please contact me if interested.

Norway Maple Spirit Pendant

August 13, 2008

Spent the day out in my screen house with all of my crafty things yesterday. I hauled out the television and set it up so I could watch TV, loaded up on ice coffee, lounged in my chair and created some lovely things for you all.
I took an imprint of a 1 3/4" Norway Maple leaf and painted a tiny face of a tree nymph that peers out from under layers of lavender and green mica powders. The hanger is sterling silver spiral and is accented by a vintage bead that has been recycled from an old necklace. I love to recycle old sterling jewelry and beads into new pieces. The total length of the pendant is 2 1/4".

I also made two other pair of really cool earrings but it got dark before I could snap any pics. Oh well, tomorrow's another day!! Stay tuned!

Silver Maple Earrings

Here are a few pictures I snapped today of a new pair of earrings created from the imprint of a 1" Silver maple leaf. Alcohol inks in different shades of green and a touch of cranberry color the leaf, then the piece is dusted with mica powders and sealed to bring out the depth of color. Khaki, olive and jonquil Swarovski bi cones accent the piece, and I used copper wire as I like the earthy, warm quality it gives. Total length of the earring is 2". Very pretty, delicate earrings for earthy Nature lovers or hippy chicks!!

Snowbaby Ornaments and Hangers

August 12, 2008

Last year I created some fun snowflake ornaments with tiny snowbaby fairies in the center. They went over so well I decided to do some more for Xmas this year. They can be made pink for girls, blue for boys, double for twins. They are created using faux stained glass over heavy acetate. The babies are Cernit or Kato clay and ae accented and decorated with micro beads, Swarovski crystals and semi precious stone. They make great ornaments for your Xmas tree, awesome shower gifts that can be personalized, or a nifty 1st Birthday gift. Here are just a few of the many I created last year:

Advent of Fall Maple Leaf Pendant/Ornament

August 9, 2008

I am really enjoying my venture so far with my wearable art and leaf jewelry. There are so many benefits that I can see:

Being outside (which I love) and walking the woods and fields around my home and my parents. It's refreshing to drive and pull over on a random road because I've seen an interesting tree or spot to stop and investigate.
Advancing in different techniques and directions with my art that I've always wanted to try. I love sculpting miniatures but also love to draw and up until now have not done much in that regard. Sculpting fantasy art is so much fun but the market has become flooded to the point where it's become a giant competition for patrons, and there's only so much money to go around, lol.
Slowly making a bit of money to support my art, which is important to me. My goal is to do this full time but I am realistic enough to realize that it takes time, so I've broken down my full time goal into pieces that I can gauge more effectively.

So, I am reading about trees, and their place in history, and creating my small pieces of art in tribute.

Here's my latest pendant/ornament:

Dragonfly Visitor

August 4, 2008

I spent a most enjoyable day with Peter today in my yard, he lounging and watching the races, and I working on some new leaf pieces. I kept hearing something hit the screen house and every time I'd look up nothing would be there so I'd go back to work again. This went on for quite some time and finally I looked up to see a huge dragonfly buzzing around my screen house. I went out to investigate and the dragonfly began to do it's strange flight around me, diving and flitting about my head. This went on for almost an hour, I'd never seen behavior like this before and it really made me wonder why? When I went back inside the screen house, the dragonfly flew against the screen house a few more times before eventually giving up. I guess it realized I did not want to come out to play anymore.

I wonder if it will visit tomorrow?

This is a dragonfly pin I have for sale in my Etsy shop!
